Bambi’s journey

Bambi is a 10 year old female yellow lab. And 3 years ago was diagnosed with bone cancer in her rear leg.  The prognosis, seemed quite bleak, since I was told that this is a very aggressive form of cancer.  At the time, I was unable to commit to amputation. And chose the course of action to be radiation, bone filler, and a low dose oral chemo.  She was doing fairly well, up until a few months ago, when the pain was starting to appear more intense, so six tramadol a day were added to her already long list of meds.  Soon there appeared to be very little relief, and we decided that we would have her undergo the amputation.  It was done on 6/13 and on 6/15 she came home. Initial shock of seeing it is very frightening. But as of today, she is getting around without any assistance.  She actually stops and lies down if I try to use the harness to help support her.  She is very independent.  It was the hardest decision of my life to make, but seeing her getting around so soon after the surgery, rolling around in the grass and soaking up the sunshine with her tail wagging made me feel the decision was right.  Many people felt it was selfish to put her thru this,  it was only because we wanted her to stay with us..there is some truth to that, we were not ready to lose her. And seeing her rapid recovering, just makes me so happy.  And although she is struggling and tires easily , I’m hoping and praying that she continues to improve and enjoy a good quality of life.  I was her voice and I wanted my words to be right….., what she would have wanted if she could choose, and seeing her fighting spirit confirms that my words were hers.
